Why are Massages so Relaxing?

Massages have mechanical effects on tissues that can help to reduce tension and promote relaxation. They can also trigger systemic or whole body responses that produce an overall feeling of relaxation. This relaxation response is thought to occur as a result of the release of endorphins and the reduction of stress hormones in the body.

Who Can Benefit from Massage Therapy?

Everyone! Massage therapists treat people of all ages who seek out treatment for many different reasons.

Whether it is for an acute or chronic injury, postural pain or just a need for relaxation, massage therapists are important partners in the management of your health and wellbeing.

Massage therapy involves the therapeutic manipulation of the soft tissues of the body such as muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissue. Registered or licensed massage therapists have significant training in the manipulation of these types of tissues. At our clinic, we offer massage therapy only by a registered massage therapist to ensure that you receive the highest standard of care.

What to Expect at your First Massage Therapy Visit

When you arrive at our clinic for your first massage therapy session, we will collect some basic information from you to start your file. If you have insurance, we will go over the details of your message coverage. We then we will ask you to fill out an intake form that covers basic medical history and details about any areas of pain or discomfort. Any information that you share with your massage therapist is confidential.

Once this has been completed you will be taken to your private massage therapy room. Your massage therapist will then go over your intake form and discuss your treatment with you. Your therapist will leave the room so that you are able change and will re-enter when you are ready for your hands on massage treatment to begin.

Throughout your massage treatment, your therapist will check with you to make sure that you are comfortable with the pressure and positioning. If you have any discomfort at any time during your massage, please be sure to let your massage therapist know.

Our main goal is to get you back to the activities that you care about!

Our massage therapist is a registered member of the Massage Therapy Association of Manitoba (MTAM) and has completed 2200+ hours of schooling from an MATM accredited program!

Massage Therapy Coverage

You may have coverage for massage therapy treatment through a private insurance plan. Information about what is covered under your plan can be found by contacting your insurance provider. Insurance plans only cover the services of registered massage therapists.

At our clinic, we do direct billing with most private insurers depending on what your plan allows. We can assist you with finding out the details of your massage coverage and what may be required. Massage therapy is not covered by Manitoba Health, Treaty benefits, the Workers Compensation Board or Manitoba Public Insurance.

Why should I see a registered massage therapist?

Currently anyone can offer massage services even if they have little education or training. However, massage therapists who are registered and members of the Massage Therapy Association of Manitoba (MTAM) must attain a set of nationally-accepted qualifications to practice massage therapy in the province.

Registered or licensed massage therapists must complete a minimum of 2-3 years of schooling (2200+ hours) from an MTAM accepted program.

These massage therapy programs include course work in areas such as physiology, anatomy, pathology, massage theory and techniques, professionalism and more. It also includes hands on clinical practicums under the supervision of registered massage therapists.

Only after graduating from the massage therapy program can therapists begin seeing patients independently. Seeing a registered massage therapist at our clinic ensures that you will receive excellent professional care.

What should I bring to my massage?

If you have coverage under a private insurance plan and would like us to do direct billing for your massage treatment, please bring your insurance card or plan numbers with you. You don’t have to worry about wearing a certain type of clothing. Your massage therapist will advise you on what areas need to be undressed and will use draping techniques with bed linens to ensure appropriate coverage.

Do I need a doctor’s prescription to have massage therapy?

No. We do not require a prescription for massage therapy treatment. However, some insurance plans require a prescription for massage to be covered. You can find out if your plan requires a prescription for massage by calling your insurance provider. We can assist you to find out this information.
